Looks fake to me... Easy way to know is to try to phone the guy mentionned at the end... Or check with the phone company if that number really exists.. Check the adress as well...

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was aware that the FBI headquarters are in Virginia, not Washington DC.

No, you're very right. Just googled it myself. I always thought they were in Philly for some reason o_O

It's bogus - it's illigal to "Track IP", and how would they get information for "30 illigal websites" that you've been there? "Hi, this is the FBI. We're calling ChildPronStar.com about this guy. Has he gone to your website? Yes? Okay, thanks a bunch. Toodles!"

EDIT

Anyone else notice the "FBI" has poor grammar?

They can do it all they want, they just can't prosecute you on evidence that was retrieved without a warrant, so basically they KNOW you did what you did, they just cant do anything about it

The crime of visiting 30 illegal porn sites is too "small potatoes" for the FBI to even bother with. They're busy with serial killers and such.

True story: 3 years ago someone stole my credit card and charged over $8000 worth of merchandise. As the transactions crossed state lines and involved the internet it became, technically, a federal offense. I notified the FBI, the US Postal Inspector and the Federal Trade Commission among others. My social security number was also stolen so I notified them as well. The US Postal Inspector came to visit my office and admitted that the FBI wouldn't do a thing about it - only because it was not that big a crime (to them).

I was really pissed about getting my identity stolen. To make a long story short, over the next week, I managed to track the person down myself (yes, it's possible sometimes if you don't mind getting your hands dirty). I assembled a 26 page report complete with chronology and the thief's personal contact information and submitted it to the local authorities. The detective assigned to my case was surprised and, jokingly, asked me if I wanted a job. It didn't take him but a few minutes to check my report and even let me come along to watch them grab the sucker who stole my ID at her workplace. It was a satisfying moment to see the look on her face when they nabbed her.

All the dorm kids here got the same exact email.

His real name is Jason Winward; he works for doubleclick and he lives in Canada. Pay it no mind...

FYI.

My workplace has received lots of these emails. There are two others circulating, one claiming to be from the CIA, the other about your AOL password.

All are viruses or hoaxes. Delete, move on.

This is why I have all emails blocked, unless I enter the addresses myself.

That's why I use multiple email accounts (some using a different name or a different form of my own name (e.g. changing my middle name)) - some of them I use for purchases, some are for forum registrations etc. My personal email is used only with people I know.

RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM THE FBI?
Don't Be Fooled!

11/22/05

We're sorry to report yet another wave of virus-laden e-mails sent out with false FBI addresses. This particular e-mail claims the FBI has been monitoring your Internet use...says you've accessed so-called illegal websites...and demands you answer questions—all you have to do is open an attachment, maliciously laced with a variant of the w32/sober virus.

Don't do it! In fact, don't EVER respond to unsolicited poison pills like these. The FBI does not conduct business this way.

Who are the e-mails from? To date, they're being sent out with email addresses of [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected].

What does the message say? Something like:

Dear Sir/Madam,

We have logged your IP-address on more than 30 illegal Websites.

Important: Please answer our questions! The list of questions are attached.

Yours faithfully,
Steven Allison
Federal Bureau of Investigation-FBI-

The spread of computer viruses affects everyone who uses a computer. We take these incidents very seriously and work hard to investigate them.

Be cyber crime smart: Visit our New E-Scams & Warnings page to learn about a variety of scams. Find tips for avoiding Internet Fraud. Go to the LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com website. And be warned about the specific dangers of the w32/sober virus and its variants at www.cert.org.

You just can't be too careful on the web.

I realize that. Many email accounts allow me to get an idea of where things are coming from. For example, if I get an email with the title "Hi" or "I miss you" - but it was received in one of my accounts I use for making online purchases or registering for forums - I'll just dump it.

Using different names just gives me a better way to track what's authentic. For instance, if I use the false name "Jonas" and receive, what looks like a personal email or important information addressed to that fake name - I know that my email address was probably grabbed from somewhere. That one gets dumped, too. I rarely use my personal email or my real name for correspondance, unless I have to.

If I have to open a suspicious attachment I'll do it on my mac, where it's safe.

When I read the first post, the first thing that came to mind was "Laugh, delete, rinse and repeat".

Pays to be sceptical. I've only ever had one virus in 6 years of owning PCs caught off a freind's own LAN server.

I was just looking at this thread and i couldnt help wondering, was the original poster really taken in by this scam? And if so, your first reaction was to ask people on a forum... a gaming forum to be exact? Sorry if this sounds impolite but thats what really struck me about this thread...
